Welcome to our website.  Maps of Ancestry is a new supplier of historical maps that has taken over a long standing map business and given it a new twist.  Jonathan Sheppard Books had been supplying maps for genealogical research for over 30 years.  In that time span they had shipped tens of thousands of maps all over the world.  Their maps were printed on parchment paper mostly in the 18 x 24 inch format.  People who were researching their ancestry found these maps invaluable.  Their foreign maps encompassed much of the world, with a concentration on European maps from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s.  Approximately half of their archive consisted of maps of the New World.  So, someone researching their genealogy could obtain maps of their ancestral city and country, as well as maps of where their ancestors settled in America. Many of these maps tell a story.  You can see the New World as it evolved from Indian villages, to surveyed rivers, early roadways, and finally railroads.

Maps of Ancestry offers the same maps for family research.  But when we were inspecting these maps we realized that many of these maps were far more than research tools.  They are works of art!  Having been produced from original engravings, by some of the worlds’ most famous cartographers, they are irreplaceable links to our past.  When mounted and framed, they become wall art that is not only beautiful, but unique to you and your family.

We are currently in the process of greatly expanding our color maps.  The maps that we offer were originally printed in black and white.  Once printed, the publisher hired artists to hand color the maps.  These original hand colored maps are what we are using to create reproductions - with colors that “pop!”  These pieces of wall are now available in our online Store.

We are excited to be in the historical map arena and look forward to interacting with you and responding to any map requests that you send to us.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a cartographer.”
John Adams
